Your child’s face is growing. Function helps guide it.

Breathing through the mouth, chewing very little, preferring soft food, a crossbite. In childhood, these signs are worth an early conversation, because growth is still happening.

Breathing

Nose or mouth: the tongue changes place.

Breathing through the nose, the tongue rests on the roof of the mouth, a natural stimulus for the upper arch. Breathing through the mouth, it tends to sit low.

  • Sleeps with the mouth open or snores
  • Wakes up tired or with a dry mouth
  • Keeps the mouth slightly open during the day
Through the noseThe tongue rests up high, on the roof of the mouth.
Through the mouthThe tongue sits low and the roof of the mouth gets less stimulus.

From sign to evaluation

A simple path for parents.

1 · What to notice

Everyday signs

Mouth breathing, fast chewing, a preference for soft food, baby teeth packed tightly together.

2 · Why it matters

The face is still growing

Chewing and breathing well stimulate the growth of the jaws.

3 · What happens early

Looking at function

At the evaluation, I observe how your child chews, breathes, and swallows, and I explain what I saw.

4 · Talk

Dr. Wagner Okai at the office, wearing fun children’s glasses

I see children from infancy. The first visit lasts 90 minutes or more, so the family has time to ask everything calmly.

Chewing

Chews very little or spits food out

Purées and very soft foods, for a long time, ask little work of chewing. It is worth noticing how your child handles firmer foods.

Bite

Crossbite

When, on one side, the upper teeth sit inside the lower ones. It often comes with chewing more on one side. It is a sign worth talking about early.
